Emerging Science and Technology to Address Naval Undersea Medicine Needs: A Workshop

Completed

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that has not deposited records to the Records Office.

US Navy submariners and divers face numerous health risks, including oxygen toxicity, inert gas uptake, neurological syndromes, noise exposure, thermal changes, and decompression sickness - among others. To protect personnel, the 2002 Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society report, commissioned by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), established priorities for Naval undersea medicine. Significant technological advancements have occurred since then, and ongoing undersea occupational hazards are being identified. The upcoming workshop will enable experts, including ONR and Naval Sea Systems Command, to revisit this report, discuss unresolved priorities, and consider how emerging innovation could advance Naval undersea biomedical research.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a one-day public workshop to examine undersea medical needs and requirements as well as the emerging science and technology to meet Navy operational needs.
This workshop will convene Navy operators, submariners, and other potential end users of undersea medicine technologies from Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Navy Fleet Forces Command as well as technical experts in undersea medicine and the medicine of extreme environments. Workshop participants will consider undersea medical needs and requirements outlined in the 2002 Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society review and advances in the state of the science for undersea medicine since 2002.
The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions to:

  • Understand the environment and warfighter needs to support undersea operations.
  • Explore emerging science and technology that could be deployed to meet the undersea medical needs of NAVSEA and Naval Fleets.

The planning committee will organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite workshop speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of a workshop—in brief will be prepared by a designated rapporteur to capture highlights of the presentations and discussions at the workshop. The proceedings – in brief will be prepared in accordance with institutional guidelines and will be released to the public.
