The National Cancer Policy Forum convened a workshop to examine the role of obesity in cancer survival and recurrence, to examine potential interventions, and to identify gaps in current knowledge. Epidemiological evidence shows that people who are obese or overweight are at increased risk of developing some types of cancer, and obesity may affect tumor progression. Workshop presentations and discussions examined the role of obesity and weight gain in the promotion of various cancers, mechanisms by which obesity may influence cancer progression, strategies for breaking the energy balance-cancer progression link, and potential interventions to improve outcomes for patients with cancer.

Recent research suggests that obesity and excess weight can play a prominent role in the incidence and progression of various cancers. Obesity results from an energy imbalance - that is, energy intake that is higher than energy expenditure - could also influence the growth of cancers. Recognizing th...

Description
An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a public workshop, whose agenda will examine the evidence for the role of obesity in cancer survival and recurrence, and identify gaps in current knowledge. The workshop, which will feature invited presentations and discussion, will examine:
· the role of obesity and weight gain in the promotion of various cancers;
· mechanisms by which obesity may influence cancer progression;
· components of energy balance that may influence cancer recurrence and survival; and
· potential ways to intervene in cancer survivors.
Workshop participants will also discuss potential ways to address knowledge gaps to improve the outcomes for patients with cancer. An individually-authored summary of the workshop will subsequently be prepared by a designated rapporteur.
