Addressing Abuses of Power to Prevent Sexual Harassment

Completed

Individuals from the Remediation Working Group within the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education will take efforts to understand the implications of power and the types of power differentials in academia, and explore strategies for addressing and mitigating power differentials in higher education.

Description

Power Differentials Project will develop a perspective paper to explore how to mitigate negative impacts of power differentials by identifying interventions that can help increase equity in relationships. Differentials in power exist in many different forms and may not always be fully recognized or understood by people implementing policies, people advocating and supporting policy changes, or even by people experiencing the power differentials. However, the amplifying effects of power differentials can impact culture and climate of workgroups, departments, and campuses (National Academies 2018). Some campuses have begun important conversations and even developing innovative programs to help mitigate these negative impacts. The Power Differentials Subgroup will explore what can be learned from these initial cases and provide insights from the experiences on their own campuses. The paper will:

  • Identify and provide definitions for different potential types of power differentials;

  • Examine how power differentials are experienced and policies and practices to respond to power differentials through case studies and hypothetical use cases; and

  • Provide information and resources to help institutions both identify and potentially address power differentials.
