Measuring Sexual Harassment Prevalence Using Campus Climate Surveys

Completed

Individuals from the Evaluation Working Group within the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education will examine evidence-based information, key considerations, and guidance for conducting campus climate surveys that measure prevalence of sexual harassing behaviors.

Description

The Evaluation Working Group of the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment under the oversight of CWSEM will compile and synthesize a literature review (“Guidance Document”) that presents evidence-based information, key considerations, and guidance for conducting campus climate surveys that measure prevalence of sexual harassing behaviors. The Guidance Document will pull from the findings and research in the 2018 National Academies report on the Sexual Harassment of Women and will expand to include the following:

  • Information on the type of expertise and key personnel that should be involved in evaluating the prevalence of sexual harassment
  • Guidance on the limitations or requirements for an institution to be able to do a quantitative assessment
  • Methodological considerations, including how to choose a survey instrument, ethics and confidentiality, assessing the experiences of vulnerable populations, and frequency and timing of survey administration
  • Information and guidance on analyzing and interpreting data, and sharing and communicating findings

The document could provide guidance on actions institutions should take, questions or considerations that an institution should take into account, and/or good examples of how institutions area doing this work or taking action. It could also lay out what is known about an area, approach, or topics, and identify areas that are in need of additional research. The document will explain the research behind these considerations where relevant and as much as possible without encumbering the document.
