Adapting to the 21st Century Innovation Environment

Completed

Today’s innovation environment is characterized by disruption, accelerated technology development, and globalized access to information, which is a dramatic shift from the largely government-controlled, Cold War innovation environment of the 20th century. The shift from an industrial age to an information age has lowered the barriers to entry into the global economy and compelled institutions to respond with greater efficiency and speed. This meeting explored how companies, universities, and the U.S. government are adapting to the accelerated pace of innovation in this open information age, and how partnerships between sectors are being utilized to adapt to the current innovation conditions.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a public workshop to consider the characteristics of the 21st century innovation environment compared to the conditions supporting innovation in the mid-to-late 20th century. It will explore how industry, government, and universities have adapted to the accelerated pace of innovation in the current open information age, and will discuss how partnerships between the three sectors play an increasingly critical role in advancing technology development and commercialization in the current innovation environment. The workshop will also consider how an investigation of the 21st century innovation environment can inform policymaking to strengthen U.S. competiveness as a leader in science and technology in the global economy. A brief rapporteur-authored workshop summary will be published.
