Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize two virtual workshops and one in-person workshop convening biosafety and biosecurity experts from the United States and India to identify issues of mutual concern and examine options for Indian-U.S. cooperation on these issues. These workshops can inform U.S.- Indian government-to-government cooperation on critical technology, consistent with the new initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) [SL1] . The initiative was announced in May 2022, and the first meeting was held in Washington, DC on January 31, 2023. The initiative was launched “to elevate and expand (U.S. and Indian) strategic technology partnership and defense industrial cooperation between the governments, businesses, and academic institutions of (the) two countries.” Possible issues for bilateral collaboration may include responsible science with emerging biotechnology, transparency and cooperation with international partners, protection of critical technology and information, training and management of personnel who work with pathogens, and regulatory approaches for sectors affected by or involved in the emergence of infectious diseases. A rapporteur will prepare a workshop proceedings for the set of workshops.
