Description
An ad hoc planning committee under the oversight of the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) will organize a workshop gathering leading researchers to explore the social returns of federal investments into the innovation system and the data, tools, and performance measures that help science policy makers assess the outcomes of federal spending on research, development, and innovation.
Panels will address these topics:
- What are the returns of federal funding of basic research?;
- What are the social returns of direct private-sector innovation support?;
- What are the social returns of public investment in human capital and infrastructure?; and
- What are the social returns of innovation in light of economic inequality?
A proceedings in brief of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
