Description
To inform the work of the Innovation Policy Forum, an ad hoc planning committee under the oversight of the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) will organize a workshop that explores how effective the Manufacturing USA institutes have been at creating partnerships among industry, academia, and government; facilitating collaboration and co-investment to nurture manufacturing innovation; accelerating commercialization; and fostering a skilled manufacturing workforce. Building on a May 2017 STEP event, this workshop will feature an in-depth discussion of a particular institute or institutes, with special attention given to processes and procedures developed by the institutes to foster workforce and economic development. Participants will compare and contrast policies to support advanced manufacturing in other countries; highlight best practices in setting up and running effective institutes; and discuss potential actions and policies to strengthen and improve the Manufacturing USA program and ensure its long-run financial viability. A workshop proceedings will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
