The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual event, The Future of Sustainability Education on Wednesday, April 28 from 10:00 am to 11:40 am EDT. The session was held as part of Nobel Prize Summit: Our Planet, Our Future.

This event highlighted the findings and recommendations from the recent National Academies report, Strengthening Sustainability Programs and Curricula at the Undergraduate and Graduate Levels with a focus on the future of sustainability education. The report provides expert insights for strengthening the emerging discipline of sustainability in higher education in the United States. Presentations and facilitated discussion examined the role of universities in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), digital learning opportunities and student engagement, and the critical need to build a K-12 pipeline to higher education.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the University of Southern California, and the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles are excited to invite you to participate in a virtual event highlighting how educational institutions and local governments can partner to achieve communities that are more innovative, sustainable, and equitable. This event will be held on April 1, 2021, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm, Pacific Daylight Time.

This event will open by setting out the recommendations of a report published in October 2020 by the National Academies, titled, “Strengthening Sustainability Programs and Curricula at the Undergraduate and Graduate Levels.” This report recommends that higher education programs embrace interdisciplinarity, experiential learning, and incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core components of the design and environment for sustainability education.

The event will center on a conversation between University of Southern California President Carol Folt and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, talking about how USC and the City are partnering on everything from equitable and accessible COVID vaccine distribution to the future of work, including a focus on green jobs and a just transition, and using the Sustainable Development Goals to frame these collaborations. Their talk will be followed by a panel discussion on how universities and local governments are building environments for sustainability education, with a focus on student experience, experiential learning and career development pathways, translation of global agendas to local practice, and the importance of centering indigenous and diverse knowledge, equity, and justice in these efforts.

An expert committee under the Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Science and Technology for Sustaianbility program is hosting a participatory workshop focused on strengthening sustainability programs and curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the United States. This is the second of three national, participatory workshops to bring together leaders in higher education sustainability programs, local government, NGOs, foundations, and the private sector to align objectives to guide sustainability programs and curricula. This workshop will take place on February 13, 2019 in Washington D.C. from 8:30am to 4:30pm and will enable various stakeholders to discuss strategies and suggestions that will guide the committee’s deliberations.
