Fall 2020 Sustainability Webinar Series: Urban Sustainability

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability convened a series of sustainability webinars in Fall 2020. Each webinar focused on the following key topics: (1) sustainability-peace nexus: refugees and migration; (2) digital transformation and sustainability; (3) plastics and circular economy; and (4) urban sustainability. The webinars were aimed at the next generation, including graduate and undergraduate students, early career professionals, and emerging leaders in sustainability and other relevant areas.
Our final webinar focused on Urban Sustainability took place on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon EST. The topic was linked to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).

The webinars were aimed at the next generation, including graduate and undergraduate students, early career professionals, and emerging leaders in sustainability and other relevant areas.
Our second webinar focused on Digital Transformation and Sustainability took place on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon EDT. Jeffery Martin, Tribal Planet, Johanna Stevns, SPACE10, and Stan Meiburg, Wake Forest University shared their rich experience and expertise, followed by a Q&A session. The topic was related to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Our inaugural webinar focused on Sustainability-Peace Nexus: Refugees and Migration took place on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon EDT in collaboration with the National Academies Committee on Human Rights. Jana Mason, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and our Roundtable member Bernard Amadei (NAE), University of Colorado Boulder shared global and engineering perspectives, followed by a Q&A session.

The topic was related to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
