The Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted this one-day public hybrid workshop in Washington, DC in October 2024 where speakers explored recent changes in state diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) legislation and policies affecting the health care and public health workforce; examined the impact of these policy changes on medical and public health training, curriculum, and health research; discussed student recruitment and faculty recruitment and retention for educating and training the health and public health’s workforce; and investigated potential solutions for mitigating adverse impacts of policy changes.

Meeting materials include the opening panel presentation slides by Dr. Jeremy Greene, Johns Hopkins University, and attendee packet, which is comprised of the agenda, speaker and planning committee biosketches, and a compilation of background readings and resources.

In October 2023, The National Academies Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a public hybrid workshop in Oakland, CA on Exploring Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Health Equity Commitments and Approaches by Health Organization C-Suites. Speakers explored the history of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and health equity efforts and how they have been implemented by health organizations. A proceedings (a written summary of this event) of this workshop is available to the public for free download below.

The workshop was well received, and attendees expressed interest in learning more about DEI and health equity implementation and metrics for evaluation. In response to their feedback, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a one-day public webinar in December 2023 that explored lessons learned from health organization C-suite (executive level leadership) representatives on their approach to framing health equity as a business imperative, metrics for evaluating progress, and emerging best practices.

The Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted this one-day public virtual workshop in July 2023 convening a diverse set of experts to discuss the premise, history, and development of race-based clinical algorithms and their contribution to health inequities. Speakers explored underlying assumptions of racial differences in physiology and when identifying race and ethnicity as social constructs are legitimate considerations for improving health equity.

The Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is convening a two day public workshop on how the COVID-19 pandemic has uniquely affected the Asian American/Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian communities. The workshop will explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and hate crimes targeting Asian populations on their health and wellbeing, including vaccination and testing participation rates, mental health consequences, and lessons learned from the long history of bias against the AA/PI/NH communities. The “model minority” trope will also be discussed as this also affects health and wellbeing for AA/NH/PI communities. Ideas for improving the health and wellbeing of these communities will also be discussed.

This webinar explored current and historical efforts to vaccinate communities of color and indigenous communities to evaluate lessons learned and their applicability to COVID-19 currently. A panel of invited speakers discussed the following questions:

Have earlier efforts undertaken to vaccinate communities of color and indigenous communities been successful?
Were there cultural components that worked (or didn’t work) well?
Who were and are the trusted sources of information that are respected by communities of color and indigenous communities?
How do we as a society address the process of vaccination in the context of systemic racism and historical marginalization of indigenous communities and communities of color?

There is ample evidence that communities of color during the COVID-19 pandemic are experiencing significantly higher rates of infection and significantly higher mortality rates when compared to white Americans. As states and communities emerge from stay-at-home orders and reopen, testing and contact tracing will be important tools to use in heading off future outbreaks of COVID-19. It is critical that contact tracing efforts are executed in ways that are appropriate to those communities experiencing a greater burden of COVID-19. In some cases these efforts must take into account the distrust some communities have in health care systems and providers. Other issues relevant to contact tracing include language, cultural competency, health literacy, stigma, and privacy concerns. Further, contact tracers may identify individuals who lack access to care and/or insurance, or the supportive services needed to isolate if positive, and some individuals will be residents without documentation. New financial resources are being made available to states and localities for contact tracing efforts. Recruiting and building a new cadre of contact tracers should meet the immediate goal of addressing the pandemic but attention could also be paid to building a public health infrastructure in communities that supports health equity.

As we learn more about COVID-19, the information about the pandemic we receive is fluid. Most recently, there have been some limited data regarding the disproportionate burden of the pandemic on communities of color. This is of course a major concern for all who are focused on achieving health equity.

The objectives for this event are below:

Outline limitations of data as it stands: methodological, organizational and political
Share any substantive, validated disaggregated data that describe potential areas of disparity, including race, gender, geography, and socioeconomic status
