This one-day workshop will showcase a series of presentations and discussion about measuring health equity. Sessions will focus on history and key concepts, the state of the science on measurement and data sources, health equity measurement in the clinical care sector, the role of communities, and cross-sector measurement insights. The event will build on earlier exploration of how we measure health equity and the factors that shape it in Metrics that Matter for Population Health Action (2016).

Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop to examine the state, use of, research on, and effects of health equity metrics at every level of the health ecosystem. Invited presenters will consider a broad range of issues that may include:
- Exploring examples of current health equity metrics used in the health sector, in different settings and at different levels;
- Examining evaluation strategies and methodologies used to assess the effectiveness of existing and emerging health equity metrics
- Discussing how health equity metrics may be used for accountability and transparency;
- Reviewing the state of the science and practice for specific social determinants of health relevant to health equity (e.g., community power, civic engagement);
- Considering opportunities to use metrics to shape actionable public and private sector investment agendas to achieve health equity
The planning committee will identify specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussion. A proceedings in brief summarizing the presentations and discussion at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
