Airports are facing an increasing number of challenges and opportunities as they strive to expand energy preparedness. They will be competing with their tenants, customers, and surrounding communities for electricity to power everything from building systems to electric aircraft. Increased dependence on energy infrastructure will make airports more vulnerable to power disruptions, while upgrades to airports' power systems and the nation’s power grid will take time and come with significant costs.

Advanced air mobility (AAM) involves the use of innovative aircraft technologies to transport passengers and cargo, typically on demand. While the AAM ecosystem will initially rely on existing airports, heliports, and routes, future developments may include dedicated facilities and new routes. The widespread adoption of AAM has the potential to impact a variety of stakeholders across multiple sectors. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, January 27, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that provided an overview of the strategies and tools needed to foster successful outreach and engagement with stakeholders.

As airports increasingly face the risk of energy service disruptions along with higher demand and costs, a strategic roadmap is critical. An airport-specific roadmap helps directors assess their current energy use, supply, and vulnerabilities; set clear goals and actionable strategies in collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen energy resilience; and prioritize these strategies within broader airport planning frameworks, including funding plans. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that provided an overview of the research and steps involved in developing an airport energy resilience roadmap. Rapid change is altering how we plan, build, and mange intermodal passenger transportation facilities. Factors as diverse as a rise in telework and advanced air mobility change user expectations. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that presented the key research findings in TCRP Research Report 250 / ACRP Research Report 275 / NCHRP Research Report 1129: Intermodal Passenger Facility Planning and Decision-Making for Seamless Travel. Presenters summarized key trends and considerations for planning, constructing, operating and serving airports, rail and bus stations, transit centers, mobility hubs, and water transportation facilities. Decision makers will need to account for trends across modes, like automated and electric vehicles. Presenters showed examples from existing and planned intermodal passenger facilities to illustrate effective practices in different contexts.

Contingency plans can prepare for impacts on staffing, financial and information technology resources, infrastructure, facilities, and/or supply chains. The fixed-base operator (FBO) industry provides aeronautical services to a wide spectrum of aircraft operators at airports. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that investigated how general aviation fared during the COVID-19 pandemic and how FBOs, as the principal service agents for the industry, met pandemic challenges and addressed changes that predated COVID-19. Since a 2018 review, the importance of an FBO’s market (customer and aircraft mix) has emerged.
