Enabling DOE Regional Energy-Water Technology Pilots

In progress

Water and energy are deeply connected. Most energy production requires water, and water utilities can make up to 30-40% of municipal energy consumption. The National Academies will explore these complex interconnections and recommend ways to support the Department of Energy’s research interests in Regional Energy-Water Technology Pilots.

Description

An expert committee selected by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will outline possible visions and programmatic elements that could bolster the design and success of DOE's regional energy-water technology pilots. The expert committee will deliberate and provide conclusions and recommendations related to the following questions defining the scope of these pilots:

  • What should be the criteria for selection of regional technology pilots, including such factors as: geographic area of the region; main characteristics of the industrial, residential/commercial, and agricultural issues within the region; the relative complexity of those issues; the level of stakeholder and community interests in energy-water issues in the region; and the potential to contribute to the development and deployment of solutions?
  • How can existing and complementary activities, resources, and capabilities at other national entities be leveraged to inform and support regional energy-water solutions?
  • How can regional energy-water technology pilots best engage with stakeholders to develop and deploy integrated solutions for future energy-water management?
  • What are the near- and long-term impacts of regional energy-water technology pilots? How should these initiatives be evaluated? What metrics should be used?
