The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will appoint a planning committee to organize a one-day public workshop on identifying and managing suicide risk among veterans in non- Veteran Affairs (VA) Healthcare Systems. The workshop will explore optimal ways to identify Veterans who receive their healthcare outside the VA system and best practices for informing these Veterans about VA benefits and connecting them with benefits for which they are eligible. The workshop will also examine how states, healthcare systems, and community- based organizations account for and manage suicide risk among Veterans who are not engaged with VA systems.
Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will appoint a planning committee to organize a one-day public workshop followed by a one-day meeting of experts on current practices and challenges for identifying and managing suicide risk among veterans in non- Veteran Affairs (VA) Healthcare Systems. The workshop will explore issues, such as the following:
1) Optimal ways to identify Veterans who receive their healthcare outside the Veterans Health Administration system.
2) Best practices to inform Veterans at non-VA entities about VA benefits and connect individuals with benefits for which they are eligible.
3) Understanding how states, healthcare systems, and community- based organizations account for and manage suicide risk among Veterans who are not engaged with VA and VHA systems.
The workshop planning committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, and select and invite speakers and other participants. A rapporteur will prepare a proceedings to summarize the discussion at the workshop and be reviewed in accordance with institutional guidelines.
