This workshop will explore how health literacy among clinical research participants might contribute to high-quality clinical care. Presentations will explore approaches for developing clinical research information that promotes health literacy, as well as strategies for integrating that information into care and community settings to enhance participation and engagement.

Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a 90 minute public workshop on health literacy and its role in enhancing clinical research understanding and enhancing research decision-making by research participants. The workshop will feature invited panelists and moderated discussion to explore:
- The role that patient comprehension of clinical research can have in delivering high-quality clinical care;
- Current and promising resources and approaches for ensuring the public is provided with clinical research information in language that is understandable to them and that promotes health literacy; and
- Strategies for the integration of clinical research information into various care and community settings to enhance research awareness and engagement.
The planning committee will define specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions. A Proceedings—in Brief of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines. The Proceedings—in Brief will be subject to an appropriate review procedure prior to release. The RRC will be consulted in the process.
