Exploring New Evidence on Weight Gain During Pregnancy and Perinatal Outcomes: A Workshop

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

Guidelines on weight gain during pregnancy were last updated in 2009. These recommendations aimed to balance the benefits and risks associated with weight change during pregnancy. At that time, there was insufficient evidence to assess the impact of pregnancy weight gain on health conditions for women in higher classes of obesity or those who are underweight. This workshop will explore new evidence on gestational weight gain and the risk of adverse health conditions for both mother and child, focusing on women with perinatal obesity and underweight.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a one day public workshop that will explore the current state of evidence on perinatal health outcomes associated with weight gain during pregnancy. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions that may include, but are not limited to:

  • The role of obesity prior to conception on perinatal outcomes
  • Maternal health outcomes associated with gestational weight gain by pre-conception BMI category.
  • Fetal and infant outcomes during the perinatal period and later childhood.
  • The role of total diet and dietary patterns in weight gain and pregnancy-related outcomes.
  • Pre-pregnancy BMI and perinatal weight gain as they relate to social and economic variables.

The planning committee will select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A workshop proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
