A study committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will develop recommendations to optimize the capability and readiness of the Department of Defense’s medical workforce to deliver care in deployed environments and support a goal of zero preventable deaths and disability.
Description
An ad hoc committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will review and assess strategies for:
· Defining clinical competencies necessary to support the Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) military operations in deployed environments.
· Developing the identified clinical competencies necessary to support DoD’s military operations in deployed environments. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) approach developed by DoD will be assessed, along with other strategies deemed appropriate by the committee.
· Developing metrics for measuring the clinical readiness of the DoD’s medical workforce for military operations in deployed environments.
· Sustaining and improving the clinical readiness of DoD’s medical workforce for military operations in deployed environments.
The committee will consider the strengths, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities of the conceptual underpinnings and methodologic approaches of strategies considered for the full spectrum of care providers, teams, and medical units necessary to support U.S. military operations in deployed environments. This will include consideration of strategies for enhancing the alignment of the clinical caseload at military treatment facilities with expeditionary practice. At the committee’s discretion, it may limit the number of clinical specialties considered.
As appropriate, the committee will make recommendations to improve the KSA approach and/or recommend other approaches by which the DoD can achieve, sustain, and continually assess, improve, and report the clinical readiness of the military medical workforce to support a goal of zero preventable deaths and disability.
