The Use of Race and Ethnicity in Biomedical Research

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will establish an ad hoc committee to assess the use of the social constructs of race and ethnicity in biomedical research. The study will evaluate how racialized group and ethnic categories are currently used in biomedical research, review existing guidance for researchers on the use of race as a variable, and provide recommendations to guide the scientific community in the future use of race and ethnicity in biomedical research.
