Description
An ad hoc committee will plan a one-half day public workshop that will examine the current state of obesity in the United States. The workshop will serve as an introductory event for the new Roundtable on Obesity Solutions and establish a context for the initiative, outline the rationale and need for the Roundtable, and explore objectives for future work. The workshop will allow members of the Roundtable on Obesity Solutions to establish a shared knowledge-base, and will serve to inform attendees of the status of and recent developments in obesity prevention, monitoring, control, and treatment. Workshop attendees will examine obesity with regard to physical activity, food systems, early care and education, and clinical care, and will consider federal, state, and community efforts. Workshop speakers and discussants on these themes will contribute perspectives from academia, industry, government, philanthropy, health care, and nonprofits. Speakers will present an update on the current epidemiology of obesity and explore the prevalence, trends, severity, and disparities across the United States. Further, the workshop will identify communities where the severity of the obesity epidemic is diminishing and explore the characteristics of these communities that engender such change. Participants will discuss investments that hold the greatest promise for future progress in reducing obesity prevalence. The committee will plan and organize the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. An individually-authored workshop summary and a workshop in brief / meeting summary will be prepared by a rapporteur. The designated rapporteur will not be a member of the committee and no committee members will be used in the development of the workshop summary or the workshop in brief / meeting summary.
