Patient-Centered Cancer Treatment Planning: Improving the Quality of Oncology Care--A Workshop

Completed

The National Cancer Policy Forum hosted a public workshop addressing patient-centered cancer treatment planning, focusing on treatment planning for newly-diagnosed cancer patients. Discussions in the cancer care planning process are often siloed, which impedes the holistic approach necessary for coordinated and comprehensive cancer care. The workshop discussed the need to integrate the patient perspective and highlighted best practices in cancer care planning.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct the workshop, whose agenda will examine best practices in cancer treatment planning with a focus on patient-centered communication and shared decision-making. The workshop, which will feature invited presentations and discussion, will identifypatient needs and expectations, relevant research, methods of communicating with patients, and current research needs important to improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer treatment planning. An individually-authored summary of the workshop will subsequently be prepared by a designated rapporteur.
