Assessing the Economics of Genomic Medicine: A Workshop

Completed

The Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health hosted a workshop that brought economists, regulators, payers and providers together to analyze three scenarios (preconception counseling, a deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism event, and directing cancer care) where genomic information could be utilized for clinical decision making. The various factors that influence costs were identified and discussed along with alternative models of implementation. The goal of the workshop was to advance discussions around the clinical integration of genomic applications.

Description

An ad hoc planning committee will plan and conduct a public workshop that will assess the potential economic impact that the advent of genomic medicine may have on clinical practice and research. The workshop will feature presentations and discussions from an array of stakeholders which may include health economists, providers, payers, guideline developers, patients, and regulators. The goal of the workshop will be to advance discussions around the clinical implementation of genetic and genomic technologies by examining costs associated with the development and use of genetic and genomic information in the care of individual patients. The planning committee will develop the workshop agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. An individually-authored summary of the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional policy and procedures.
