Topics

Since 1990, the Academies has been engaged in a program of workshops, exchange visits, and scientific consultations with the Iranian Academy of Sciences, the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and other institutions in Iran. A report describing these activities was published in 2010.

Both the Iranian Academies and the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine continue to foster cooperative relations between scientific and intellectual leaders and government officials from both nations through meetings of experts, individual visits in both directions, and continued consultations. Areas of near-term interest include climate change, resilient cities, and water and air pollution.

Description

This project will support cooperative activities with Iran, including meetings of experts, individual and group visits in both directions, and continuing consultations with scientific and intellectual leaders and government officials in the United States and Iran. Among the topical areas of near-term interest are climate change, conservation of wetlands, water and air pollution, desalination, hospital administration, and breast cancer.

A meeting will take place in December 2017 between American, TWAS, and Iranian scientists. The purpose of the meeting is to (a) consider adaptation to impacts of climate change in the United States and Iran and (b) identify focal points for future collaborative efforts in environmental science and technology. A Workshop Proceedings in Brief will be produced following the meeting.

In addition, Glenn Schweitzer will prepare an individually authored report that documents the history of the U.S.-Iran engagement program from 2010 to 2016.
