The One Health framework is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach to understanding the interconnectedness of people, plants, animals, and the environment. In this webinar, our guests will discuss different facets of human health and climate change. What are the major threats to human health in the coming decades? What are some of the major challenges to understanding and addressing these threats? What are the tensions between improving human health in the immediate term and the protection of the broader ecosystems that are essential for the well-being of all life on Earth?

Equity and justice are becoming more salient in both the deployment of sustainable technologies and the infrastructures to address climate change. This webinar explores approaches to use scientific and engineering tools in ways that center these human considerations in energy, health, and climate change research and systems development. To equitably mitigate and adapt to climate change, scientists and policymakers will need to measure and understand climate impacts such as physical infrastructure damage and public health outcomes with particular concern about disproportionate effects on disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, and simultaneously develop strategies to provide equitable and affordable energy access for historically excluded populations. This webinar will examine the tools and interdisciplinary approaches needed to characterize these impacts and develop solutions that help reverse historic inequities. The panel will begin by examining how combining socio-physical models of infrastructure with understanding of changing physical hazards such as extreme heat, wildfires, and hurricanes can enable building resilient communities. The presenters will then discuss how tools from data science to predict the civic and societal processes to drive environmental related policies can complement these models. The panel will conclude by considering cross-cutting challenges in including energy equity and environmental justice in these analyses, while seeking to address concerns about the use of data and identifying “knowledge gaps” that may prevent effective use of this data.
Imagining, planning for, and building sustainable futures will require new approaches to understanding how existing sociotechnical systems and climate-related disasters lead to disproportionate impacts on marginalized communities in the US, and how issues of equity and justice can help guide climate and energy-focused scientific and engineering research and development. There exist few–if any–standardized approaches and framework to such work. This webinar intends to spark discussion and debate on how to use advanced scientific and engineering research approaches in creative yet rigorous ways to promote equity and justice.
