One of the primary goals of this research was to establish the changes in the AASHTO lighting recommendations based on the research results. The results of this research, however, indicate that no changes are ready to be proposed at this time.
When considering the impact of roadway lighting on ADAS type systems, the recommended levels were in the midpoint of the current AASHTO guidelines, so no specific recommendation is required at this time. Similarly, the preparation of the lighting system for the future includes the implementations of controls-ready luminaires which is also in the current guidelines for adaptive lighting. However, further research for the refinement of that recommendation is also recommended.
When considering the development of the CMFs for the application of roadway lighting, the research highlighted potential changes in the approach to roadway lighting analysis that could be undertaken, including collecting more data from multiple sites, the use of measured roadway lighting, multiple sites from one lighting design, and the use of hourly and ADT data to allow for variations in road usage.
When considering the impact of light on flora and fauna, recommendations include further development of the moon metric to verify the use of the calculation, defining the limits of the moon metric, and further defining the applicability of the methodology to lighting design.
These recommendations provide guidelines for further research and development; however, at this time, it is believed that the development of language for AASHTO consideration is not warranted.
