APPENDIX B
KM Resources for Transportation Agencies

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)

  1. AASHTOʼs Committee on Knowledge Management (https://transportation.org/km/) focuses on developing strategies for managing transportation knowledge more effectively. This group offers guidance and shares best practices with state DOTs to help them improve their KM capabilities and foster better knowledge sharing across the transportation community. The site contains an excellent resource page.
  2. AASHTO is also a partner in the National Transportation Knowledge Network (https://transportation.libguides.com/ntkn), which provides access to an extensive collection of transportation-related research, publications, and datasets. This network facilitates knowledge sharing among transportation agencies, academia, and the private sector.
  3. AASHTO publishes a variety of documents (https://store.transportation.org/), including:
    • Standards and guidelines. These publications help states apply uniform standards and practices across transportation systems. For instance, the AASHTO Green Book sets design standards for highways.
    • Research reports. AASHTO commissions and publishes research on emerging transportation issues, best practices, and innovations in areas such as project management, safety, and sustainability.
    • Transportation policy papers. These papers provide insights into transportation policy, funding, and governance, offering valuable knowledge for decision-makers.

Transportation Research Board (TRB)

  1. The TRB has a dedicated Standing Committee on Information and Knowledge Management (IKM) (AJE45) that focuses on KM practices within transportation organizations, including DOTs. This committee provides a platform for KM professionals to collaborate on research projects, share best practices, and discuss innovations in the field. They often hold sessions, webinars, and workshops at the TRB Annual Meeting (https://sites.google.com/view/ikm-aje45).
  2. Transportation Research International Documentation (TRID) is an integrated database that combines the records from TRBʼs Transportation Research Information Services Database (https://www.trb.org/InformationServices/InformationServices.aspx) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Developmentʼs Joint Transport Research Centreʼs International Transport Research Documentation Database (https://www.itf-oecd.org/international-transport-research-documentation-public). TRID provides access to 1.4 million records of transportation research worldwide.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) KM Resources

The FHWA KM mission is about connecting people and leveraging the technologies that help make those connections. Key efforts are designed to strengthen processes, create collaborative workspaces, and provide innovative use of technology to share knowledge. FHWA KM focuses its work through 22 technical disciplines that make up FHWAʼs workforce (www.fhwa.dot.gov/km).

State DOTsʼ Internal KM Systems and Peer Exchanges

Some state DOTs have their own internal KM communities and peer exchange programs where knowledge sharing is encouraged among departments. These internal resources often provide a more focused approach to the KM challenges within the transportation sector.
