Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and host a hybrid, public workshop in Washington, DC, with both in-person and virtual participation to discuss the various benefits and issues related to open access (OA) and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices for chemistry and chemical engineering research and publications. The workshop would include discussion around:
· Comparing subscription-based publications and the "gold open access model”;
· Ensuring scientific rigor and reproducibility across various models;
· Delivering equitable access to publications across a broad range of researchers and educators;
· Examining financial and logistical implications on publication groups, research sponsors, researchers, academic institutions, and others;
· Discussing implications of emerging FAIR practices on chemistry and chemical engineering research publications
· Protecting intellectual property, commercial interests, and fair competition across public and private sectors;
· Understanding the relationship between emerging artificial intelligence capabilities and open access information and its potential impacts on research; and
· Learning from other disciplines and their approach towards OA.
The workshop will provide a forum to explore the social, financial, scientific, and research impacts of transitioning into open access and FAIR data practices. Ultimately, these discussions will center around the question, "How will open access and FAIR data practices impact research and innovation within the chemistry and chemical engineering communities?"
A workshop proceedings-in-brief, authored by a rapporteur, will be published after the workshop.
