The convergence of data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and the life sciences constitute an emerging area of research that holds great promise for advancing scientific knowledge to improve human health but may also be exploited for harm and misuse. Genetics and genomics data, and other biological data coupled with AI, facial recognition, or other advanced data analytics is promising but is also associated with security concerns. In anticipating the transformative potential of this research, the National Academies seeks to explore best practices that promote positive scientific innovation while minimizing harm and risks collaboratively with scientists from South and Southeast Asia.
