Engaging Scientists to Prevent Harmful Exploitation of Advanced Data Analytics and Biological Data-- A Workshop Series

Completed

The convergence of data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and the life sciences constitute an emerging area of research that holds great promise for advancing scientific knowledge to improve human health but may also be exploited for harm and misuse. Genetics and genomics data, and other biological data coupled with AI, facial recognition, or other advanced data analytics is promising but is also associated with security concerns. In anticipating the transformative potential of this research, the National Academies seeks to explore best practices that promote positive scientific innovation while minimizing harm and risks collaboratively with scientists from South and Southeast Asia.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene a planning committee of international scientists to develop up to two workshops to discuss practices for anticipating and countering malicious exploitation of scientific developments enabled by the combined use of advanced data analytics, specifically artificial intelligence and facial recognition, with genomic and other biological data with scientists from the U.S., South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The two workshops would:

  • Explore current and cutting-edge developments and applications (both beneficial and harmful uses) of advanced data analytics and biological data through a series of scenario-based exercises;
  • Identify existing and needed practices for cyber, data, and information security and evaluation of data inquiries from various state and non-state actors; and
  • Discuss which identified practices are effective and translatable in different institutional contexts.

The workshops will involve engagement with early-career and established scientists from the U.S., South Asia, and Southeast Asia. NASEM will prepare a single, rapporteur-prepared proceedings-in-brief based on the workshop discussions.
