A Population Health Workforce to Meet 21st Century Challenges and Opportunities: A Workshop

Completed

The population health workforce includes a wide range of workers in different sectors and settings, from governmental public health agencies to non-profit organizations.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the unfolding challenges presented by climate change are among some of the factors that call for a stronger, better prepared, and sustainable workforce to promote and protect the public's health. This all-virtual (live webcast) event will feature perspectives on meeting the needs and seizing the opportunities to build a better population health workforce.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop to review and discuss a defined set of issues related to the multi-sector workforce for population health improvement. Issues discussed may include:

  • who are the workers (e.g., workers in public health, in community-facing health system, in the social sector)?;
  • what education, training, and competencies do they need(including within such frameworks such as public health accreditation, and in the context of 21st century challenges and opportunities)?;
  • how can the workforce be strengthened and supported?;
  • addressing attrition, pay, and related matters; and
  • optimal use of the resources being made available in the wake of the pandemic.

Topics will be discussed in the context of the need to promote equity (including in the workforce pipeline) and ensure readiness to respond to evolving opportunities (e.g., pandemic-related funding) and challenges (e.g., health implications of climate change).

The planning committee will identify specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussion. A proceedings summarizing the presentations and discussion at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
