Integrating Systems and Sectors Toward Obesity Solutions: A Workshop

Completed

In 2019 and 2020, the Roundtable on Obesity Solutions held a two-part workshop. Part one provided background on systems theories, methodologies, and applications. Part two addressed systems and the context for obesity, influencing systems, and examples from the field.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and conduct a one-day public workshop that will feature invited presentations and discussions to (1) introduce the concept of complex systems science and (2) consider systems approaches to obesity solutions.
Workshop presentations will provide a background on systems theories and applications, and will feature examples from within and outside of the obesity field. In addition, presentations and discussions will explore existing societal systems that have the potential to shape the health and wellbeing of the population and will consider opportunities for change as they relate to obesity solutions. The workshop will explore systems and contributing factors that can influence obesity (including the roles that (in)equity, relationships, connections, networks, capacity, power dynamics, social determinants, and political will play) and their impact on effective communications and cross-sector collaboration.
The planning committee will plan and organize the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and may moderate the discussions. Following the workshop, staff will post the slides and video recordings of the workshop to the activity website. A proceedings of a workshop--in brief and full workshop proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
