Resilience of the Research Enterprise During the COVID-19 Crisis: A Virtual Workshop Series

Completed

The COVID-19 pandemic will have profound and unprecedented impacts on the lives and livelihoods of Americans and people worldwide. Challenges presented by the crisis will likely persist in the long-term, as shockwaves reverberate throughout the economy, and many of these changes could have a permanent impact on the research enterprise. The significant and evolving challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitate new and meaningful collaboration between government, universities, and companies in both the short- and long-term. This GUIRR series connected stakeholders to discuss critical challenges and opportunities for adapting to the changing research environment of the pandemic.

Description

An ad hoc planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a series of six short, virtual workshops to consider various aspects of the impact of the global COVID-19 crisis on the U.S. research enterprise for members of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable and invited guests. The workshops will explore emerging challenges related to the pandemic affecting the research enterprise, including significant economic slowdown, supply chain security, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The series will also explore the ways in which government, university, and industry actors have mobilized to adjust to the new challenges around communication, open science, collaboration, and work models to enable the continued productivity of the enterprise. The virtual workshops - each two hours in length - are meant to catalyze high-level policy discussions and to stimulate further dialogue on opportunities and challenges for cross-sector collaboration within the context of adapting to the changing research environment of the pandemic. Each speaker will provide a paper summarizing their presentation, to be posted on the project website. In addition, a brief rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings may be published encompassing all workshops in the series.
