Topics

On March 14-15, 2023, the National Academies convened a two-day conference to encourage the use of data, research, and experiments to improve the way scientific research is supported in the United States, particularly by federal agencies. Discussions at the event were also intended to help identify potential opportunities for collaborations between federal agencies and academic researchers who focus on these topics. A workshop proceedings is being prepared.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene a two-day public workshop to explore new types of experiments and evaluation to improve the outcomes of federal funding of scientific research. The current system for making funding decisions raises a number of concerns--including, for example, potential biases that may favor more established researchers, less risky proposals, and a narrow applicant pool. The workshop will gather leading researchers in the burgeoning area of the science of science funding to propose experiments and evaluations in federal funding mechanisms to address these concerns. A workshop proceedings will be prepared by a designated rapporteur.
