State of Knowledge Regarding Transmission, Spread, and Management of Chronic Wasting Disease in U.S. Captive and Free-Ranging Cervid Populations
In P.L.116-188, America's Conservation Enhancement Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was directed to lead a task force for addressing chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the United States drawing on a report commissioned from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Academies’ report, linked below, assists the task force in prioritizing research and developing future CWD management strategies. It describes the state of knowledge regarding how CWD is transmitted among cervids, the current distribution of disease outbreaks, and the effectiveness of current diagnostic, prevention, and control methods available to limit the spread of the disease.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 20, 2024 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
