‘Psychosis’ describes conditions that affect the mind, causing one to lose touch with reality. Symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, and inappropriate behavior. Studies show that people commonly have psychotic symptoms for over a year before receiving treatment and reducing this duration of untreated psychosis is critical because early treatment is associated with better recovery.
This workshop will focus on early intervention for psychosis, examine the data on the epidemiology and outcomes for people at high risk for psychosis, for those who have experienced a first episode of psychosis, and will consider ways to improve the care for these individuals.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and host a public workshop that will explore how to potentially improve the behavioral health system with a focus on early interventions for psychosis, such as early prevention, identification, treatment, and recovery. The workshop will feature invited presentations and moderated discussions on topics that may include:
• The epidemiology of first episode psychosis and the population at high risk for psychosis, including international data, and gaps in knowledge
• The current models of effective or promising interventions and service delivery for patients with early psychosis and populations at high risk for psychosis
• Evidence on short and long-term outcomes of early prevention efforts for those at high-risk of psychosis and interventions for those who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
The planning committee will develop the agenda for the workshop sessions, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
