Exploring the Power of Youth Leadership in Creating Conditions for Health and Equity: A Workshop

Completed

This event will highlight the role of young people in improving the conditions for health, equity, and well-being through actions at the local and national level. Participants will learn about the history of youth-driven social change relevant to health, explore projects led and staffed by youth, and hear insights about the outcomes of youth engagement and leadership.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a public workshop to explore how young people are engaging in and leading efforts to improve the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence the health and equity of communities and the nation.

Presentations and discussion may (1) highlight case examples from select domains in which young people engage (e.g., education, climate justice, community safety); (2) discuss the types of civic infrastructure and resources that support youth participation and leadership of change efforts; and (3) explore the available evidence on how young people themselves (and society at large) benefit from being involved in this kind of work.

The planning committee will identify specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussion. A proceedings summarizing the presentations and discussion at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
