Brain-Machine and Related Neural Interface Technologies: Scientific, Technical, Ethical, and Regulatory Issues - A Workshop

This virtual public workshop examined scientific, technical, ethical, and regulatory issues related to brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and related neural interface technologies. It considered implications of these technologies for user autonomy and privacy, issues associated with the collection and use of data obtained from them, and oversight/governance of their use.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine will organize a public workshop to examine scientific, technical, ethical, and regulatory issues related to brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and related neural interface technologies. The workshop will: 1) review advances in BMI and related neural interface technologies; 2) consider current and future applications; and 3) examine ethical and regulatory issues associated with their use. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions that may consider such topics as: 1) the implications of BMIs and related neural interface technologies for user autonomy and privacy; 2) issues associated with private party collection and use of data obtained by BMIs and related neural interface technologies; 3) U.S. and International regulatory frameworks governing the use of BMIs and related neural interface technologies; and 4) potential regulatory gaps in U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) oversight of these technologies. A proceedings in brief prepared in accordance with institutional guidance by a designated rapporteur will be issued following the workshop.
