At the end of the workshop, planning committee chair Kathryn A. Moler (Stanford University) presented a summary and synthesis of the workshop themes with a slide presentation that she had prepared during the 2 days as speakers presented. She provided a brief summary of each speaker’s comments, as well as suggestions of potential actors to be assigned to each of the recommendations provided by Toby Smith in the session “Legislative, Regulatory, and Other Types of Responses,” drawn from sidebar discussions during the workshop. Moler suggested that we must gather more data to better understand the problem of research security, including the percentage of open research collaborations with scientists from the People’s Republic of China that result in ethical violations.
