CHAPTER 1
Introduction
The objectives of this research are to (1) develop a guideline for load rating of segmental bridges; (2) propose revisions for the AASHTO’s The Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE) for both load factor rating (LFR) and load and resistance factor rating (LRFR) along with any necessary revisions to the AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications (referred to herein as AASHTO LRFD); and (3) develop detailed rating examples accompanied by training materials to illustrate the proposed Guideline and proposed revisions to AASHTO specifications. NCHRP Research Report 1128 documents research carried out in Phase I through Phase IV of the project.
