WHAT ARE CLIMATE TIPPING POINTS AND WILL WE ENCOUNTER THEM?

It seems like every few weeks there is a headline about climate tipping points. We know that elements of the climate system have undergone abrupt change in the past, and that physical systems can transition to radically different states in the face of a small push. But there are conflicting definitions of Earth system tipping points, and thus conflicting statements about whether we are indeed on the brink of encountering them as the Earth warms. I will review the potential for irreversible, abrupt, or self-sustaining (“runaway”) change for some of the Earth system elements for which climate tipping points have been proposed.

The Roundtable on Mentorship, Well-being, and Professional Development will be holding an open session on the roles, responsibilities, expectations, and benefits that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students and postdoctoral scholars serve and receive across the U.S. STEM enterprise. Through this session, the Roundtable is hoping to explore the current landscape and history of graduate student and postdoctoral scholar labor movements, including questions such as:

What are the current expectations of STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and how have these changed?
Why are these critical members of the STEM ecosystem turning to unionization and collective bargaining?
What is the full extent of this current movement?

Since the release of the National Academies consensus report Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations: Beyond Broadening Participation in February 2023, the overall landscape of ADEI in the United States has shifted within national and local contexts. The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences will host a dissemination event on January 29-30, 2024 that will acknowledge new challenges to advancing ADEI in STEMM and provide space for focused discussions on the practical implementation of several key recommendations in the report. The event will include sessions on strategies for forming partnerships with Minority Serving Institutions, responding to resistance to change, fostering inclusivity at the teams and organizational levels, and the role of gatekeepers in fostering ADEI.

Facial Recognition Technology: Current Capabilities, Future Prospects, and Governance

Facial recognition technology is increasingly used for identity verification and identification, from aiding law enforcement investigations to identifying potential security threats at large venues. However, the use of the technology raises significant concerns related to equity, privacy, and civil liberties.

Please join the National Academies for a public briefing webinar on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 11am ET to explore our new report on the current capabilities, future possibilities, and necessary governance for facial recognition technology. The report discusses legal, societal, and ethical implications of the technology, and recommends ways that federal agencies and others developing and deploying the technology can mitigate potential harms and enact more comprehensive safeguards.

During the webinar, members of the committee will discuss the main messages from the report and take questions from the audience. Watch the webcast and submit questions below.

In May and June of 2023, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine convened a six-part virtual workshop series that engaged early-career and established scientists from Central Asia, the United States, and elsewhere to exchange experiences and collaboratively identify best practices for protecting biological and life science data and knowledge while promoting the sharing of these scientific data. This workshop series was attended by over 50 expert scientists and was an overwhelming success in which many professional connections were made. The full proceedings of the workshop series will be published and freely available in both English and Russian in early 2024.

Through an additional two-day virtual meeting in December of 2023, we aim to share and discuss what was learned during the workshop series with other relevant groups, including key decision makers at ministries, scientific academies, universities, and institutes across Central Asia. Following the meetings, we plan to continue discussions with researchers, scientists, and decision makers to clarify issues and gaps in current policies and practices surrounding life science data, and what is needed to address such gaps through sustained engagements in 2024.
