The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public webinar highlighting the results of an analysis of NIH funding for women’s health research published in our recent report, A New Vision for Women’s Health Research: Transformative Change at the National Institutes of Health.
Overall, research about diseases and conditions affecting women and girls, who represent over half of the U.S. population, remains chronically underfunded. Understanding funding gaps at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and how to assess them, is critical for deciding how to best move forward to advance women’s health.
Our March 20 (1:00-2:00pm ET) webinar highlighted actions to advance women’s health with a focus on opportunities for professional societies and organizations.

Breakthroughs to improve health and well-being for women and girls have lagged, in part, due to a lack of baseline understanding of basic sex-based differences in physiology. Despite significant advances in healthcare, critical gaps in women's health remain. From hormonal health to heart disease, women's health research has historically been underfunded and overlooked. A new report from the National Academies, “A New Vision for Women’s Health Research: Transformative Change at the National Institutes of Health (NIH),” reviews the state of women’s health and assesses funding levels for women’s health research at NIH. The authoring committee was asked to provide recommendations on NIH structure, policies, and programs to optimize women’s health research as well as recommendations for research priorities for conditions that are female-specific, more common among women, or that impact women differently. The committee was also asked to provide recommendations to build, support, and maintain a robust NIH workforce for women’s health research and identify the allocation of funding needed to address research gaps.

In a public release webinar on December 5th at 11:00 a.m. ET, members of the report authoring committee provided an overview of the report’s conclusions and recommendations and answered audience questions. The webinar recording is posted below along with the slides.
