CHAPTER 1
Objectives

The objectives of the TRB TCRP Project D-20, “Investigation and Mitigation of Insulated Joint Electrical Failure,” are listed below. TCRP Research Report 255: Investigation and Mitigation of Insulated Joint Electrical Failure: A Guide documents the results of this work.

  • Identify potential causes of insulated joint (IJ) electrical failures, particularly those under high currents resulting from onboard alternating-current (AC) propulsion.
  • Determine and document the electrical conditions under which various types of IJ failures occur.
  • Develop guidelines for maintenance personnel to diagnose IJ electrical failures and determine the best mitigation of the root causes.
  • Recommend additional research needed to address the root causes of IJ electrical failures.
