APPENDIX A
Observed Names for Selected ADAS

Practitioners can use Tables A-1 through A-3 in this appendix to identify common names for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and other terms that can be used to search for resources. The tables include the ADAS reviewed in Phase I, selected from Clearing the Confusion: Common Naming for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (AAA et al. 2022). These ADAS warn drivers of potential collisions, perform collision-avoidance maneuvers, or assist with driving control while the vehicle is moving forward. The first two columns in each table contain information identified in Clearing the Confusion (AAA et al. 2022); the last column lists various names observed during the Phase I review, including the names used by some manufacturers. Words from these names may be helpful when identifying information sources for specific types of ADAS.

Table A-1. Observed names for selected Collision Warning type ADAS.
A table with 3 columns and 4 rows lists common A D A S names, descriptions, and other names in educational materials.

aAAA et al. 2022

Long Description.

The table has 3 columns and 4 rows. The column headers in Row 1 are Common Name and Acronym, Clearing the Confusion Description, Triple A et al. 2022; Other Names Observed in Educational Materials. Row 2: Blind Spot Warning, BSW; Detects vehicles in the blind spot while driving and notifies the driver to their presence. Some systems provide an additional warning if the driver activates the turn signal; Blind Spot Detection, Blind Spot Information System, Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Passive Blind Spot Monitoring. Row 3: Forward Collision Warning, FCW; Detects a potential collision with a vehicle ahead and alerts the driver, Some systems also provide alerts for pedestrians or other objects; Forward Collision Warning and Object Detection, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Forward Collision Alert System, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Forward Collision Warning with Mitigation, Collision Avoidance System, Pre-Crash Systems, Rear-End Crash Avoidance System, Automotive Collision Avoidance System. Row 4: Lane Departure Warning, LDW; Monitors vehicleʼs position within the driving lane and alerts driver as the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markers; Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Keeping System, Lane Departure Detection, Lane Keeping Systems, Lane Assist Technology, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Keeping Alert Mode, Aid Mode, Alert plus Aid Mode, Lane Sense, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist.
