Siting electric transmission lines along transportation corridors presents technical, policy, and economic challenges and also significant potential benefits for the public, the electric system, and transportation. Read about the outcomes and perspectives gathered from the workshop held in April HERE. Then, join the National Academies for a virtual webinar on for a Publishing Release webinar on August 21 at 2:00 pm where opportunities, benefits, and barriers for the use of highway and rail rights of way for electrical transmission learned from the meeting will be discussed.
The workshop brought together key decisionmakers in the planning, operation, ownership, use, and regulation of transmission projects and transportation rights-of-way to discuss ways to support the development of these projects. Speakers at the proceedings release event will discuss next steps for state-level policies and incentives, cooperation models, and cross sector engagement.

The goal is to convene water researchers, students, policymakers and community leaders in this workshop to exchange knowledge on advanced techniques & technologies for transboundary water resources management. This workshop will be co-led by co-PI Prof. David Feldman and partner and co-host Augustina Alexander (University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania). The objectives of the workshop are to discuss:

Novel advanced techniques & technologies for transboundary water resources management;
Policy approaches to make international collaboration more effective;
Practices for increasing input of water experts into policymaking;
Impacts of extreme events and hazards on global security and diplomacy;
Concerns that international cooperation compromises national interest and security;
How science diplomacy can help successfully manage security challenges;
Case studies in different basins exemplifying success and failure in connecting science to diplomacy, global security and peace-building within different scientific and diplomatic systems;

On June 12, the Committee on Human Rights (CHR) of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) convened the ninth meeting of leaders of healthcare and scientific associations to address the problem of broad-based assaults on health professionals.

Since the Forum’s creation in 2022, participants have shared that the group provides an important opportunity to discuss threats to the safety and well-being of health professionals, share relevant resources, and identify partners for independent initiatives (e.g., article, events) that address violence against health professionals in the U.S. and internationally. The goal of June meeting was to devise new strategies for advancing the aims of the Forum amidst intensifying attacks on health professionals around the world. The discussion was informed by the results of a Forum participant questionnaire that helped identify current barriers and opportunities for this work and concrete actions participants may be able to take to support health professionals, both domestically and internationally, in need of assistance.

On June 4, 2025, the National Academies Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics and Board on Human-System Integration, convened a hybrid workshop, Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability: Maximizing Benefits for the United States.
The workshop examined how AI can be leveraged to maximize benefits for the United States at the intersection of nature, people, and this critical technology. A most recent meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability was held on June 4-5, 2025.
On June 4, the Roundtable, in collaboration with the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics and the Board on Human-System Integration, convened a one-day public workshop, Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability: Maximizing Benefits for the United States. The workshop examined how AI can be leveraged to maximize benefits for the United States at the intersection of nature, people, and this critical technology.

As part of Advancing Drug Discovery: A Webinar Series of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, a session on Lead Discovery in Terra-Scale Chemical Spaces with Modular Screening and Deep Learning Approacheswill be held on Thursday, May 15th, 2025 at noon (EDT). The 60-minute session will consist of a presentation from Dr. Vsevolod “Seva” Katritch, Professor of Quantitative & Computational Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacology, University of Southern California.

Abstract:

Recent technological advances, including (i) high accessibility of structural information for therapeutic targets, (ii) giga-scale on-demand and generative chemical spaces, and (iii) new computational tools, both physics-based and machine learning, have great potential to streamline and democratize early drug discovery. We have recently developed a new computationally driven platform, combining fast V-SYNTHES screening of billions of diverse drug-like compounds (Sadybekov et al, Nature 2022) and SAR/optimization tools, leveraging on-demand chemical spaces like Enamine REAL. The upgraded V-SYNTHES-DL platform with deep learning-based accelerator and RTCNN scoring function is now scaled up to cover trillions of compounds of the next-generation xREAL Space. The V-SYNTHES approach was initially validated in several target classes, including GPCRs and kinases, enabling discovery of new drug-like chemotypes with nanomolar affinities and potencies.

We now expand the application of this computationally driven platform to a broad range of highly challenging targets, in close collaboration with synthetic/medicinal chemists, structural/systems biologists, and pharmacologists as part of the CNT3D center at USC. In just 2 years, CNT3D advanced more than 20 pilot projects for challenging targets selected by disease experts, targeting pain and addiction, immune and neurodegenerative disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer. The results include the discovery of high-quality hits and lead series in most of these projects, with two optimized compounds advancing in preclinical development. These examples suggest that structure-based computationally driven platforms combining physics-based and deep-learning methods can provide fast, cost-effective quality entry points for drug development.

Short Speaker’s Bio:

Dr. Vsevolod “Seva” Katritch is a computational biologist and computational chemist interested in deciphering molecular function and structural pharmacology of membrane proteins, primarily the superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). He also develops new physics-based and AI-based technologies facilitating discovery of new ligands and potential drugs for GPCRs and other clinically relevant targets, exploring giga- and terra-scale chemical spaces. His work has led to 9 patents and more than 150 papers, including the V-SYNTHES approach to giga-scale screening and review on computer-driven drug discovery, both published in Nature. He is named among Web of Science's Highly Cited Researchers in two categories: pharmacology/toxicology and biology/biochemistry.

Dr. Katritch graduated and received a Ph.D. in biophysics and molecular biology from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, followed by postdoctoral training at Rutgers University and The Scripps Research Institute. Before joining USC in 2015, he served as a director of computational chemistry at SIGA Technologies and held research faculty positions at the University of California, San Diego, and the Scripps Research Institute.

The U.S. National Committee for Soil Sciences will host a webinar on communicating soil science through story-telling, artificial intelligence, and modern visualization.

Storytelling can significantly enhance the understanding of soil science by making complex concepts more accessible, relatable, and engaging to a wider audience. By humanizing scientific concepts and framing them within narratives, abstract ideas become more tangible and memorable. Stories can provide historical context, illustrating how our understanding of soil has evolved over time and highlighting its importance in human civilization and cultural development. This approach can effectively demonstrate the interconnectedness of soil science with other disciplines such as archaeology, ecology, and agriculture, helping people appreciate the far-reaching impacts of soil health. By including cultural perspectives, storytelling can highlight the global importance of soil and foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration in soil science. Storytelling can transform complex scientific data into more understandable narratives, making soil science more approachable for non-experts and encouraging wider participation in soil-related discussions. Finally, stories can be used to illustrate potential future scenarios related to soil health, climate, and food security, helping people visualize the long-term impacts of our current and future soil management practices.

By reimagining how we visualize and narrate soil science, integrating traditional storytelling methods with cutting-edge visualization techniques, we can create a more engaging and scientifically robust field. This powerful fusion not only makes complex soil concepts more accessible but also honors varied perspectives. The approach enriches our understanding of the intricate relationships between humans and our diverse global soil resources, while making soil science more approachable to a wider audience. This innovative combination of traditional wisdom and modern technology offers a unique pathway to communicate the importance of soil science in a way that resonates across disciplines.

As part of Advancing Drug Discovery: A Webinar Series of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, a session on Quantum Computing-Enhanced Machine Learning Algorithm Unveils Novel Inhibitors for KRAS will be held on Monday, April 25th, 2025 at noon (EDT). The 60-minute session will consist of a presentation from Dr. Christoph Gorgulla, assistant member (faculty) at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and associate at Harvard University, with time for a short question and answer session at the end.

Abstract:

The discovery of promising small molecules remains one of the most resource-intensive stages in drug development, particularly for challenging targets such as KRAS, a key driver in many cancers. While classical computational approaches have improved in quality and efficiency, they still face limitations in exploring the vast and complex chemical space to discover the best possible molecules. In this talk, we will explore a quantum-classical generative modeling framework designed to enhance molecular design by leveraging quantum computing. By integrating quantum algorithms with established classical methods, the approach enables the generation of chemically meaningful candidates with therapeutic potential. The application to KRAS inhibitor design demonstrates how quantum resources can complement and extend current capabilities in drug discovery.

Short Speaker’s Bio:

Dr. Christoph Gorgulla's research mission is to contribute to the transformation of drug discovery and molecular biology by integrating high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, quantum chemistry, and quantum computing.
He holds a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology with a focus on bioinformatics, a B.Sc. in Mathematics, and an M.Sc. in Mathematics with focus on quantum physics. He earned his Ph.D. from Freie Universität Berlin, the Berlin Mathematical School and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, focusing on computational drug design. This interdisciplinary training enables him to bridge theoretical method development, software engineering, and real-world biomedical applications.
Following his postdoctoral research at Harvard University, he joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2023 to establish and lead a team in computational drug discovery. In 2024, he became a faculty member in the Center of Excellence for Data-Driven Discovery within the Department of Structural Biology of St. Jude, where his research group continues to develop next generation computational methods based on AI and quantum computing, and apply them to challenging problems in ligand discovery and therapeutic innovation.

Dr. Miriam Feldblum, Executive Director of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration (a consortium of college and university leaders), discussed the Alliance’s work to increase public understanding of how immigration policies and practices impact students, campuses, and communities.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Plastics provides a multi-sectoral forum for examining issues associated with national efforts to reduce plastic pollution. The Roundtable is currently organizing a Perspectives on the Plastics Lifecycle series as stage setting activities to gain a better understanding of the full plastic lifecycle.

Join us Friday, April 18, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM ET for the webinar, Plastic Pollution and Fate. This session will focus on the global problem of plastic pollution and its downstream effects. It will include an overview of the sources, fate, and transformation of plastic in the environment and discussions of the ecological, economic, and human health impacts of plastic pollution. The event will include presentations by Kara Lavender Law (Sea Education Association), Chelsea Rochman (University of Toronto), and Tracey Woodruff (University of California, San Francisco). The session will be moderated by Plastics Roundtable Member Imari Walker-Franklin (RTI International).
