The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene an ad hoc planning committee of international scientists to develop a workshop to discuss practices for anticipating and countering malicious exploitation and accidental harmful use of current and future research in neuroscience.

Description

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene an ad hoc planning committee of international scientists to develop a workshop to discuss practices for anticipating and countering malicious exploitation and accidental harmful use of current and future research in neuroscience. The committee will engage early-career and established researchers of diverse genders, nationalities, and disciplines to engage in discussions that integrate core concepts of safety and security with current research activities and trends. The workshop will be informed by a bibliometric analysis of current research ongoing in Southeast Asia in neuroscience. The workshop will:

  • Explore current and cutting-edge developments and applications (both beneficial and harmful uses) of neuroscience and brain-related research through a series of scenario-based exercises, which will be informed by the bibliometric analysis;
  • Discuss responsible innovation, shared norms, and broader safety and security awareness including bio, cyber, data security practices relevant to neuroscience; and
  • Discuss which identified responsible science practices are effective and translatable in different national and institutional contexts.

NASEM will prepare a rapporteur-prepared proceedings-in-brief based on the workshop discussions.
