Exploring the Bidirectional Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience: A Workshop

Completed

There is a longstanding, bidirectional relationship between neuroscience and computer science, especially in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). As AI continues to expand, the consistent engagement of neuroscientists in conversations on the uses, regulation, implications, and public’s concern could shape the field’s trajectory. Anticipating the need for these cross-disciplinary conversations, the National Academies' Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted a 1.5-day workshop in March 2024 that convened a diverse group of experts that examined the current and potential use of AI in neuroscience and examined strategies to enhance public and regulatory understanding of AI utilization.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a 1.5-day public workshop to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in neuroscience research and discuss how neuroscientific discoveries have aided in the development and advancement of AI technologies. This workshop will convene a diverse group of leaders and experts across sectors within the neuroscience and AI ecosystems to further the conversation on current and potential use of AI in neuroscience and opportunities to enhance public and regulatory understanding.
Invited presentations and discussions may:

  • Explore the bidirectional relationship between neuroscience and AI, including the contributions neuroscience has made to the development of AI and the utilization of AI to further understanding of the brain.
  • Discuss the utility and limitations of AI (e.g., potential biases that may impede the accuracy and fairness of decisions made) in basic, translation, and clinical neuroscience research.
  • Examine the potential for autonomy and agency in AI systems, and the associated implications for the field of neuroscience.
  • Discuss the role of neuroscientists in equipping regulators and the public with knowledge and resources for the responsible use of AI in research, clinical, and general applications.
  • Consider research priorities and public education needs regarding the role of neuroscience in AI and AI in neuroscience research.

A planning committee will develop the agenda for the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants and moderate the discussions. Following the workshop, a proceedings of the presentations and discussions will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
