The Role of Business in Obesity Solutions: A Workshop

Completed

On April 12, 2016, the Roundtable on Obesity Solutions convened a 1-day workshop in Washington, DC, to examine the role of the business sector in obesity solutions. The goal of the workshop was threefold: (1) explore why companies should be involved in obesity solutions and how to encourage them to do so; (2) identify reasons why businesses might be interested in being involved in obesity solutions; (3) identify ways in which business can be engaged in obesity solutions.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a one-day public workshop that will examine the role of the business sector in obesity solutions. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions that will explore why and how to encourage companies to be involved in this area, why they might be interested in being involved, and the various ways in which businesses can be engaged in obesity solutions. The workshop will also provide a space for attendees to discuss multiple business sectors, as well as both the role of businesses as employers and as actors within the broader community. Participants will discuss relevant examples from business and public health, and will delve into the impact that obesity has on business practices, as well as the positive impact the business sector can have on obesity.
The committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, and select and invite speakers and other participants. After the workshop, a brief workshop summary of the event will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
