Operational traffic simulation models are powerful tools that help transportation agencies improve planning, design, and real-time operations. Understanding how state departments of transportation (DOTs) develop, manage, and apply these models can enhance consistency, reliability, and decision-making across projects. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that explored how DOTs use operational traffic simulation models in practice. Presenters shared examples of how simulation modeling supports real-world transportation projects, and discussed lessons learned from Virginia’s policies and practices for traffic operations analysis.

This webinar was based on NCHRP Synthesis Report 650: Practices for Operational Traffic Simulation Models.

Accurately diagnosing the causes of crashes allows transportation professionals to select the most effective countermeasures. TRB will host a webinar on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that will present tools and methods for conducting diagnostic assessments and selecting countermeasures within the Safe System framework. The session will emphasize the importance of understanding human factors, behavioral influences, roadway conditions, and user interactions when choosing treatments to address crash types and road user needs. TRB Webinar: Improving Teen Driver Safety

The latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data indicates that fatality and crash rates among teen drivers have been increasing over the past few years. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Eastern that discussed the results from two BTSCRP reports that used naturalistic driving data to gain a broader understanding of the risks facing teen drivers. Presenters shared evidence on how the amount of time spent with supervised experience in different roadway environments can improve safety outcomes once teens begin driving independently. Presenters also discussed how distraction, specifically “eyes off the road,” changes with driving experience and why attention to the forward roadway is especially critical for teen learners. Newly-published findings compare risky driving and crash rates with for teens with distraction factors like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

About

Well-designed bus operator workstations and barriers can decrease driver risks of low back pain and slowed response time. Improving the health and safety of bus operators’ physical environment makes the job more appealing and drivers more productive. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Eastern that discussed how to mitigate the health and safety risks that are present for bus drivers. Presenters shared strategies for addressing these risks and highlighted effective approaches to improve the design and management of bus operator workstations.

This webinar was based on TCRP Research Report 247: Assessing Lifecycle and Human Costs of Bus Operator Workstation Design and Components and TCRP Research Report 249: Bus Operator Barrier Design: Guidelines and Considerations.
