This chapter provides a framework and outline of the field guide (see Figure 11.1). The research team included the following elements that are designed for a large audience of census data users:
The field guide framework is centered on the scenarios, fictional cases illustrating various uses of census data, to make the field guide more relevant to practitioners and an integral part of their daily workflow. The research team discusses how the basics, resources, and census data applications tie into each aspect of a scenario. These discussions range from the description of the problem to the relevant census datasets to use. The research team also discusses other applications that have a bearing on a scenario and provides a range of resources, including scripts, visualizations, and brief documentation.
Training and outreach are critical elements of the field guide. Training materials were developed for each element of the field guide and integrated with the scenarios along with mini exercises on using the data to address different use cases. These materials can help users develop a better understanding of census data and how they can be used for various analytical and policy purposes.
The flowchart presents a field guide framework structured with four main components and one overarching theme. At the top is a horizontal bar labeled Training and Outreach with a downward arrow pointing into the main framework. Inside the central box are three main sections connected to a central oval labeled Scenarios. On the left is a box labeled Basics, and on the right is a box labeled Applications of Census Data. Both have arrows pointing to and from the Scenarios section. Below Scenarios is a box labeled Resources with arrows pointing upward to Scenarios and downward from it, indicating two-way interaction.
