A new report "Nuclear Terrorism: Assessing and Improving Strategies for Preventing, Countering, and Responding to Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism" will be publicly released at 8:00 AM ET on June 18, 2024. On this date, please join us for a panel discussion highlighting the findings and recommendations from the report with leading stakeholders from the counterterrorism offices in the U.S. government.
The panel will include:

Stephen Flynn, Committee Chair and Founding Director of the Global Resilience Institute at Northeastern University
Madelyn Creedon, Committee Vice Chair and Chair of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States
Jeffrey Chamberlin, Acting Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, National Nuclear Security Administration
Scott Roecker, Vice President, Nuclear Materials Security, Nuclear Threat Initiative

The panel will be moderated by Colin Demarest, Journalist and Reporter at Axios.
This study provides a timely evaluation of potential gaps and offers recommendations to strengthen America's defenses against the unthinkable – a nuclear terrorism attack on our soil or against our allies.

This study responds to a congressional mandate in the FY2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which calls for the National Academies to address the adequacy of strategies to prevent, counter, and respond to WMD terrorism, and identify technical, policy, and resource gaps. The nuclear threats assessment encompasses state-sponsored and non-state actors from acquiring or misusing the technologies, materials, and critical expertise needed to carry out nuclear attacks, including dual-use technologies, materials, and expertise. The nuclear threats study will result in a report with consensus findings and recommendations to advise Congress, Department of Defense, National Nuclear Security Administration, and other relevant agencies. In open session, selected speakers will present on relevant topics to the committee members and to the public. A brief discussion will follow afterwards with the committee in closed session.

The nuclear threats study will result in a report with consensus findings and recommendations to advise Congress, Department of Defense, National Nuclear Security Administration, and other relevant agencies.This meeting will include briefings and panel discussions with relevant U.S. agencies to inform the classified annex of the report.

This study responds to a congressional mandate in the FY2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which calls for the National Academies to address the adequacy of strategies to prevent, counter, and respond to WMD terrorism, and identify technical, policy, and resource gaps. The nuclear threats assessment encompasses state-sponsored and non-state actors from acquiring or misusing the technologies, materials, and critical expertise needed to carry out nuclear attacks, including dual-use technologies, materials, and expertise. The nuclear threats study will result in a report with consensus findings and recommendations to advise Congress, Department of Defense, National Nuclear Security Administration, and other relevant agencies. In open session, selected speakers will present on relevant topics to the committee members and to the public. A brief discussion will follow afterwards with the committee in closed session.
